The robots beneath the turbines: underwater autonomy finds its market offshore
Resident underwater vehicles that live on the seabed are replacing dive crews and survey ships across offshore wind farms — and the operating model is spreading to oil, gas and telecoms.

Every offshore wind foundation needs regular inspection — cable burial checks, scour monitoring, marine growth surveys, corrosion assessment. The traditional method involves a survey vessel, a launch crew, and weather windows that shrink to nothing in a North Sea winter. The new method involves a robot that never leaves.
Resident autonomous underwater vehicles, garaged in subsea docking stations with inductive charging and data links, now patrol a growing number of European wind farms year-round. Operators report inspection costs falling by more than half, and — more valuably — inspection frequency rising tenfold.
From campaign to continuous
The shift mirrors what docked drones did for overhead grid inspection: turning an annual campaign into a continuous data stream. Anomalies are flagged between formal surveys, and digital twins of foundations update weekly rather than yearly. Certification bodies have begun accepting resident-AUV data in place of periodic vessel surveys, removing the last structural obstacle to adoption.
The operating model is spreading. Subsea telecoms operators are trialling resident vehicles for cable route monitoring, and two North Sea oil operators have contracted year-round autonomous integrity inspection beginning in 2027.
