US utilities trial live-line maintenance robots on transmission network

Robotic systems that service energised high-voltage lines promise to cut outage windows — and keep lineworkers out of the most dangerous job in the grid.

Two major US transmission operators have begun field trials of robotic live-line maintenance systems capable of replacing insulators and repairing conductor damage on energised 345kV lines, work that today requires either de-energising circuits or sending lineworkers up under live conditions.

The trials, running through 2027, pair line-crawling manipulator robots with drone-based delivery of parts and tooling. Early results suggest a 60% reduction in planned outage hours for routine component replacement.

Grid operators face a decade of unprecedented load growth from datacentre and electrification demand while their most experienced line crews retire. Robotics vendors have taken notice: at least nine companies now market transmission-specific platforms, up from three in 2023.
