Explainer: what 'teleassist' actually means — and why every AV company depends on it
No autonomous vehicle fleet operates without remote humans. Understanding the difference between teleoperation, teleassist and supervision is essential to reading the industry honestly.

Every commercial autonomous vehicle operation on earth — robotaxis, yard trucks, sidewalk robots, mining haulage — relies on remote humans. The companies are not hiding this, exactly, but the vocabulary they use blurs distinctions that matter enormously for safety, economics and regulation.
The three tiers
Teleoperation means a remote human directly drives the vehicle in real time. It is rare in production systems because network latency makes it dangerous at speed; it survives mainly in low-speed logistics and mining. Teleassist means the vehicle handles all driving but requests human input for decisions — confirming it may proceed around a double-parked truck, for example. The human approves a plan; the vehicle executes it. This is the dominant production model. Supervision means humans monitor many vehicles against alerts, intervening only by exception.
Why the ratio is the whole business
The economics of every AV operation reduce to the vehicles-per-remote-operator ratio. FieldPilot reports one operator overseeing twelve yard tractors; leading robotaxi operators are estimated to sit between five and fifteen vehicles per operator. When a company declines to publish its ratio, that silence is usually the most informative data point in the earnings call.
Regulators are catching up: California and the EU both now require disclosure of remote-intervention rates in permit renewals, and the honest end of the industry has begun publishing them voluntarily.
